Evgeny Hontor makes small but incredibly detailed sculptures from velvet clay. My favourites are this particular series where he created these tiny animals with incredible detailed patterns layered over them to create a swirling and complex “skin”.
From looking at His work it’s easy to see that the Russian artist loves fantasy creatures and puts great detail into each one. These tiny sculptures’ patterns make me think of these creatures being almost tribal and reminiscent of cave drawings. The simple one colour of these pieces leaves it simple enough to bring out the pattern and markings in the piece. These little sculptures look almost like totems for animals rather than actual depictions of creatures, as if the creatures essence had been seen and put into the sculpture through the pattern work.
